PA Hemp Home: Lessons Learned

PA Hemp Home is a pilot project in New Castle, Pennsylvania, executed to research, test, and apply HempLime insulation in the renovation of a small home.

The project was initiated as an example of a healthy, low-carbon emitting renovation of an affordable American home.

In response to the issues with typical construction materials and methods currently in practice, DON Enterprises convened a collaborative team to test a new path forward. The construction industry is one of the largest carbon emitters contributing to the climate crisis, and tens of thousands of tons of hazardous chemicals used to make building products harm people’s health, particularly in our homes. These issues are linked to large-scale and local environmental disasters.

Today, amid multiple environmental and health crises, there is an increasing demand for innovative building solutions. Projects like the PA Hemp Home, which include regenerative, environmentally sustainable, and benign construction materials, decarbonize the industry and make healthier places for people to live.
