A facade and its underlying structure create the appearance and language of a building. Together with aesthetics, considerations of thermal performance, durability and maintenance are critical factors for these product choices.
Where energy efficiency in building product innovation has made great strides in the past decades, material choices have not always included consideration of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) pollutants.
Avoiding commonly added toxic chemicals, such as halogenated flame retardants, high VOC emissions or toxic binders, allows exterior material choices to continue the goal of material health for people and planet.
Below are a few examples of exterior and structural products that meet our rigorous evaluation. For further help on your own search, scroll down to "Spec Guidance”.

Low Embodied Carbon
“Embodied Carbon” is the total amount of carbon emitted during the process of making a material. *HML refers to a manufacturer's EPD to determine whether a product's A1-A3 carbon emissions falls within HML's threshold for Low Embodied Carbon.
New Product
This product has been added to the collection within the past six months.
Product in Development
Products with this designation identify they are currently scaling or only available in markets outside of the building industry. they could be experimental or in use in capsule collections.
Available in the EU
Products with this designation are currently available only in the European Union and identified as being an exemplary healthy option in the respective product group.
Ingredient Disclosures
There are several ways of evaluating a material’s health that we include with product information. Disclosures are reports by manufacturers about product ingredients, impacts, or other attributes.
Key Disclosures include:
Health Product Declaration (HPD)
A voluntary technical specification for reporting information on product contents and associated health information, intended to be the health-analogue to Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).
Declare Label
Declare is a transparency platform and product database that answers three questions:
1. Where does a product come from?
2. What is it made of?
3. Where does it go at the end of its life?
Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)
A standardized format for communicating the environmental effects associated with a product’s raw materials extraction, energy use, chemical makeup, waste generation, and emissions to air, soil, and water.
Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
A reporting format that provides basic information about a material’s chemical ingredients, the potential safety hazards to installers, and recommended practices for installation.
USDA Certified Biobased Product Label
Managed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the goal of the BioPreferred Program is to increase the purchase and use of biobased products.

Romabio | Classico Limewash |
Classico LimewashAvailable At the Donghia Materials LibraryClassico Limewash is a slaked-lime ( lime mixed with water) paint with which you can achieve wash off effects on interior or exterior brick and masonry. After application, it calcifies to the brick, turning hard as a rock. It does not chip or crack due to allowing moisture to evaporate. The high pH of the paint makes it naturally mold-resistant. As a result, maintenance is minimal. The application is done by brushing the paint on the wetted surface and creating the patina effect by hosing spots off the wall. Fungi Force - BioshieldAvailable in the EUFungi Force is an exterior wood stain that is made of two components - a water-based stain with Aureobasidium pullulans fungi and a linseed oil finish. It has a transparent matte black appearance. This is a living organism and therefore, the linseed oil serves as food for the fungus and also keeps the moisture out of the wood. The fungus protects the wood as well as the oil against UV radiation. It is recommended to regularly treat with linseed oil during the first year of use. After the first year, regular maintenance is recommended every 3 to 5 years and can be reapplied as needed if color fades. The fungus classifies as non-pathogenic to humans. Gamle Mursten | REBRICK |
REBRICKAvailable At the Donghia Materials LibraryLow-Embodied Carbon MaterialAvailable in the EUGamle Mursten upcycles and reuses bricks from demolition of old buildings. As the bricks are cleaned by hand or per patented vibration technology without water or chemicals, substanial embodied carbon savings result from it. Due to being recycled, there is no information on the material health and composition of the original bricks. As per the manufacturer, bricks typically come from buildings with lime mortar construction, dating from 1900 to 1960. These bricks were fired in ring ovens, which gave the clay a unique spectrum of colors and helped give these materials a longer lifespan. Per Gamle Mursten's product-specific EPD, this product meets HML's criteria for low embodied carbon. Superwood | Superwood |
SuperwoodLow-Embodied Carbon MaterialAvailable in the EUSuperwood uses a patented technology to impregnate spruce for exterior applications without heavy metals or solvents. The impregnation process uses recycled carbon and organic fungicides to increase board durability, eliminating the need for additional surface treatments. After impregnation, the carbon and excess fungicides are recycled. Note: 1 gram of fungicide is left per board at the end of the process but the wood remains biodegradable. Per Superwood's product-specific EPD, this product meets HML's criteria for low embodied carbon. The products in this collection have all been evaluated holistically for their contents and performance. To be considered, a product must disclose at least 75% of its ingredients by weight and avoid the biggest health concerns, as indicated by their disclosure documentation.
For exterior products that means that they avoid halogenated flame retardants, solvents or toxic binders and are low-emitting with VOC requirements of 50 grams per liter for coatings, 100 g/l for primers and stains, and 50 g/l for tints. *BuildingGreen
Spec Guidance
Prefer coatings without PVA. Choose acrylic coatings with no polyvinyl acetate added.
Prefer solvent-free finishes. Use mineral silicate paints comprised of potassium silicate as they contain no solvents or VOCs and are resistant to UV and mold, mildew, and fungal growth. They require very little maintenance and have a long service life.
Avoid added biocides and antimicrobial additives. Biocides in stains and paints could potentially leach from the coating into surrounding water and soil
Avoid PolyFluorinated Chemicals. Choose Metal coatings that do not require highly fluorinated compounds (PFA/PFC) which may stay in natural surroundings for millennia
Avoid Hexavalent Chromium. It is used in vast industry processes such as coatings and applications. According to the EPA, Hexavalent Chromium (chromium VI) targets the lungs and depending on length of exposure, can be a carcinogen.
Look for coatings with less than 50 g/l of VOC content - after tinting
To extend the life of materials, include maintenance protocols in coordination with Facility Management
