Interior Paints

When it comes to health concerns about paints, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) get the most attention. However, binders, pigments, and additives can present a variety of other toxicity concerns. For example, Alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs) are a group of chemicals used in acrylic paint to allow pigments to blend better. But APEs are suspected endocrine disruptors and can cause hormone dysfunction in people, animals, and sea life.

Most common interior paints are acrylic based, made primarily from petrochemicals derived from fossil fuels. Acrylic paints contribute to the massive amount of microplastics in the environment, and making these paints is carbon intensive and contributes to the climate crisis.

Healthier mineral-based paints are available on the market as alternatives to plastic-based paints.  This can involve a learning curve for contractors and installers. We list several mineral-based paints that have been tested for durability and ease of application. Ensure a breathable wall system by working with a mineral-based primer if necessary.

Below are a few examples of paints that meet our rigorous evaluation. For further help on your own search for healthier paint, scroll down to "Spec Guidance”.

Linseed Oil Paint

Available At the Donghia Materials Library

Linseed oil paint offers a healthy, durable alternative to acrylic products. Ottosson’s product is manufactured at their facility in Genarp, Sweden, which was established in the late 1980s. The technique used in making their paints, however, dates back to the 16th century. Cold-pressed raw linseed oil and natural pigments are ground in a triple-cylinder mixer, incorporating the pigments evenly into the linseed oil. The result is a linseed oil paint that creates a breathable, easy to maintain surface that doesn’t peel or bubble up.

*NOTE: Ottosson Linseed Oil Paints contain zinc oxide, a natural fungicide. It adds hardness to the paint finish and is a necessary additive in several North American climates. Zinc requires a warning label due to potential aquatic toxicity under Swedish law. When disposed of responsibly and used as directed, it poses no threat to the health of humans or the environment

Graphenstone

Available At the Donghia Materials Library
Low-Embodied Carbon Material

Graphenstone has updated traditional lime paint formulas with their product by adding graphene, a material made from carbon. Graphene lends the paint extreme strength, durability, and washability. Additionally, the use of lime creates a paint that is not only free of harmful substances, but one that also actively improves indoor air quality by absorbing toxics and CO2. The white interior and exterior paint have a Cradle to Cradle Gold certification.

This product meets HML's criteria for low embodied carbon in part because of its use of renewable energy and CO₂ absorbing ingredients. As the product is produced in Spain, shipping can negate it's low emission score.

*NOTE: Recently, researchers have raised health concerns about graphene. According to the manufacturer, Graphenstone uses Nano Fibers of Graphene (NFG), which has a larger structure that is not harmful to human health.

The products in this collection have all been evaluated holistically for their contents and performance. To be considered, a product must disclose at least 50% of its ingredients by weight. It should avoid the biggest health concerns (such as those indicated in the HML Spec guidance for this product category) or be third-party certified. For paints, this means that they do not contain chemicals prohibited by the GS-11 Standard for Paints and Coatings. These base paints and colorants in this collection also meet the VOC Content limits established by the CARB Architectural Coatings Program.

*Exceptions have been made for titanium dioxide and crystalline silica due to a current lack of feasible alternatives.

Spec Guidance

Minimize specifying Acrylic Paint. New research shows that Acrylic (Plastic) Paint appears the largest source of microplastics in oceans and waterways. And, acrylic paint is now found in human blood. https://www.e-a.earth/plasticp... https://www.sciencedirect.com/...

Prefer Mineral-based paints. They tend to avoid VOCs and hazardous additives. Certain mineral-based paints also absorb impurities from the air, actively improving indoor air quality.

Look for paints that meet the Green Seal-11 (GS-11) standard from 2010 or later. This certification limits the content of VOCs and prohibits other potential hazards such as heavy metals, carcinogens, mutagens, and reproductive toxins.

Prefer paints that meet the strict VOC emission standards of the CDPH Standard Method.

Specify paints with a VOC content of 10g/L or less. Look out for VOCs in colorants.

Avoid paints that contain alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs). APEs, the most common of which being nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) are surfactants commonly added to paints to help the pigments stay evenly spread throughout the paint base. These chemicals break down into harmful endocrine disruptors. They have been banned in the European Union, Denmark, and Japan.

Limit titanium dioxide contents. A whitening aggregate added to many paints, titanium dioxide is a possible endocrine disruptor and carcinogen.

Linseed oil paints are another good choice. Follow installation instructions to avoid spontaneous combustion from oily rags etc. drying.

  • To prepare for linseed oil paint application, rough the surface with fine grit sandpaper.
  • For best results, apply thin, even coats of linseed oil paint to a clean and dry surface.
  • Wipe oil on surface with a cloth to avoid brush strokes with linseed oil paint
  • Leave ample time for the dry time of Linseed oil paint as they are longer than conventional petroleum-based paints.
