Healthier Affordable Building Products

These healthier products have been reviewed by project teams working in affordable and public housing and meet performance and maintenance requirements. 

Low Embodied Carbon Materials

This list highlights healthier products evaluated for low embodied carbon and emissions from raw material sourcing, transport, and manufacturing (lifecycle stages A1–A3).

Secondary Raw Materials

Secondary raw materials are residuals generated during production processes that can be recovered and reused, supporting the circular economy.

HempLime

Products made from hemp and lime (HempLime), offer healthy, carbon-negative, recyclable, pest-resistant, energy-saving building materials that support communities.

Healthier Exhibitions

Exhibition design should prioritize the reuse of materials and the selection of healthy, natural, biodegradable products to reduce waste and limit harmful exposure.

Healthier Millwork and Cabinetry

Furniture often includes many components, each needing evaluation for health and carbon impacts–including wood, textiles, finishes, and surface treatments.

Biofabricated Materials

Biofabricated materials harness microorganisms such as yeast, bacteria, and fungi to produce products with innovative functions and aesthetics.

Healthier Model-Making Materials

Models and prototypes help develop and evaluate projects. As with building materials, healthy model-making materials are vital but often lack ingredient disclosure.

Straw Products

Straw, a carbon-storing agricultural byproduct, provides natural insulating products. It's pest- and fire-resistant, energy-efficient, and regionally sourced.

Emerging Materials

Products marked as ‘in-development’ are still being scaled in production, potentially not  widely available yet, usually below TRL 7.
