HempLime products are a superfood for the building industry. Products made from hemp and lime offer healthier alternatives in insulation, wall systems, textiles, and more because they do not contain harmful petrochemicals. Both hemp and lime absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and hemp plants also regenerate depleted soils while they grow.
HempLime products are naturally resistant to pests, mold, and fire, eliminating the need for toxic chemical additives. HempLime products also improve interiors because they have excellent acoustic properties and naturally regulate humidity and heat. The insulative properties of HempLime make it an energy-efficient building material and require very little energy to produce. And hemp and lime products are naturally biodegradable. They can be fully recycled and reused to support a zero-waste economy.
Also, the burgeoning hemp industry in the US supports regenerative economies and communities, tackling social justice issues through agriculture and workforce development.
Appendix BL Hemp Lime (Hempcrete) Construction is now available in the International Code Council's International Residential Code (IRC 2024)

About Our Collections
The goal of our collections is to help promote transparency in the material ingredients of building products by fostering knowledge and awareness of products and materials for which life-cycle information is available, and that have environmentally, economically, and socially preferable life-cycle impacts.
Keep an eye out for the following symbols:
A Healthier Affordable Building Product
Products with the designation of "Healthier & Affordable" were specified and installed in at least one of our Case Studies of healthier affordable housing.
Available at the Donghia healthier Materials Library
The Donghia healthier Materials Library library is open to Parsons student and faculty. Learn more about access and opening hours here.
Low Embodied Carbon
“Embodied Carbon” is the total amount of carbon emitted during the process of making a material. *HML refers to a manufacturer's EPD to determine whether a product's A1-A3 carbon emissions falls within HML's threshold for Low Embodied Carbon.
New Product
This product has been added to the collection within the past six months.
Product in Development
Products with this designation identify they are currently scaling or only available in markets outside of the building industry. they could be experimental or in use in capsule collections.
Available in the EU
Products with this designation are currently available only in the European Union and identified as being an exemplary healthy option in the respective product group.
Ingredient Disclosures
There are several ways of evaluating a material’s health that we include with product information. Disclosures are reports by manufacturers about product ingredients, impacts, or other attributes.
Key Disclosures include:
Health Product Declaration (HPD)
A voluntary technical specification for reporting information on product contents and associated health information, intended to be the health-analogue to Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).
Declare Label
Declare is a transparency platform and product database that answers three questions:
1. Where does a product come from?
2. What is it made of?
3. Where does it go at the end of its life?
Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)
A standardized format for communicating the environmental effects associated with a product’s raw materials extraction, energy use, chemical makeup, waste generation, and emissions to air, soil, and water.
Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
A reporting format that provides basic information about a material’s chemical ingredients, the potential safety hazards to installers, and recommended practices for installation.
USDA Certified Biobased Product Label
Managed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the goal of the BioPreferred Program is to increase the purchase and use of biobased products.

BENEFITS OF USING HEMPLIME PRODUCTS:
Interior Health: HempLime products are naturally pest, mold, and fire-resistant.
Interior Quality: HempLime products have excellent acoustic properties, and naturally regulate humidity and heat.
Energy Efficiency: The insulative properties of HempLime make it an energy-efficient building material and requires very little energy to produce. The amount of CO2 sequestered during hemp's growth exceeds the amount emitted during production. Similarly, the CO2 emitted while processing limestone to make lime is re-absorbed as lime cures.
Zero Waste: Hemp and Lime are naturally biodegradable and 100% recyclable and reusable.
Spec Guidance
Refer to the new code, published in 2024: “Appendix BA” in the International Residential Code (IRC). It applies to one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses. With hempcrete approved for residential building codes, it can more easily be approved and specified.
Hempcrete has recently passed US thermal resistance testing (R-value) required by the Federal Trade Commision for insulation. This testing identifies Hempcrete’s ability to regulate temperature, which is comparable to existing insulation standards.
Choose the hemplime application according to your needs: cast in place, pre-fabricated, or sprayed.
Clean Hemp Hurd. Keeping hemp hurd free of dirt and fibers is paramount to having a good end result.
Reference the R-value if using hempcrete for insulation. Hempcrete's R-value range is approximately 2.2-4.8/inch. Calculate the right mixture based on the desired insulation value and wall thickness.
Plan on collecting the overspray from spray-applied HempLime. Added back into the mix, it allows for minimizing waste.
HempLime mix should be free from cement additives. An ingredient disclosure will help you determine that.
Clay aggregates added to lime plaster are fast acting but can rapidly shrink. Seek guidance on the right composition for your project.
Use a lime binder that is specifically designed for HempLime building.
The type and coarseness of aggregate impacts the function of Lime products. Seek guidance on the right composition for your project.
As this industry grows, we will be able to find more US suppliers for Hemp and Lime products. This will contribute to lowering the carbon footprint.
As this is an evolving industry, aim to be knowledgeable about all parts of the HempLime ecosystem, including but not limited to, the agricultural and lime extraction processes, the latest construction practices, and building code changes.
