Room to Daydream at Thrive Global

The Room to Daydream, opening November 30th at Arianna Huffington's Thrive Global, introduces healthier materials to the world of healthier sleep habits. Our design is a 20 minute “daydream” experience in an environment that is attuned with the body’s mechanisms for napping, providing a comfortable and healthy space for a respite. Twenty minutes is proven to improve mood, alertness and motor skills. A visitor emerges relaxed and rejuvenated.

Role Models: Healthier Modeling Material Alternatives - Investigations by Del Hardin Hoyle

Students often use building insulation – extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam – to prototype designs. Unfortunately, XPS contains flame retardants that are harmful to human health. In summer 2016, the Healthy Materials Lab began looking for alternatives to XPS foam with student safety and wellness as the primary focus.

One Part Per Million

One Part Per Million, a thesis project by Parsons MFA Design and Technology student Ava Burke, is a collaborative needlepointed data sculpture that seeks to raise public awareness about the health and environmental consequences of our reliance on petrochemicals by exploring the impact of one chemical in particular: vinyl chloride.

Interior Futurists

On March 28th, 2016 the Healthy Materials Lab hosted the Interior Futurists Festa at Parsons School of Design. The event was held in an unusual immersive space designed and built by MFA Interior Design students at Parsons School of Design, and brought together the NYC Interior Design community, alumni and friends of Parsons, and advocates for healthy materials towards making healthier homes.

What’s inside the various products that make up our daily environment—in the walls of our buildings or the chemicals in our home? In the spirit of transparency, the windows of the Kellen Gallery will feature a display by the Parsons Healthy Materials Lab of common building materials that may or may not contain harmful toxins.

Greenbuild is the largest convention and expo dedicated to sustainable building, and this year, Parsons Healthy Materials Lab was there. They shared their passions for affordable healthy building alternatives and socially engaged design with attendees from around the globe via social media coverage and their very own convention floor booth.
