Plant a Seed
In Plant a Seed, Henning Larsen shows how wood can scale as a viable, lower-carbon alternative. The publication includes projects and practical guidance for building with timber and biobased materials as a way to cut construction’s carbon impact. Download it here.
Plant a Seed is Henning Larsen’s exploration of what happens when we reconsider the very materials of our craft. Wood and other bio-based materials offer more than a beautiful alternative to concrete and steel; they actively store carbon, dramatically reduce transport emissions, and invite a new kind of circularity into how we design and build. Drawing on projects across Scandinavia, Germany, and France, this handbook is an invitation to think differently about timber: from forest to façade, from structure to fiber.
The publication begins with an introduction about building in wood, including reasons to use it and debunks certain myths about building in wood. It continues with a vast number of projects as inspiration. The final part of Plant a Seed covers specifications, from different wood species to treatments, modifications, coatings and differences in structural wood and systems.
As architects, urbanists, and landscape architects we hold ourselves accountable to fight and mitigate our industry’s effects on the climate, but we cannot do it alone. -HLA
