Interior Paints

While VOCs get the most attention when it comes to healthier paints, there can be a variety of other toxicity concerns in their binders, pigments, and additives. Look for paints that not only meet the best standards for emissions, but have also been screened for toxic substances through certifications like GreenSeal-11 (GS-11).

About Our Collections

The goal of our collections is to help promote transparency in the material ingredients of building products by fostering knowledge and awareness of products and materials for which life-cycle information is available, and that have environmentally, economically, and socially preferable life-cycle impacts.

Keep an eye out for the following symbols:
A Healthier Affordable Building Product

Products with the designation of "Healthier & Affordable" were specified and installed in at least one of our Case Studies of healthier affordable housing.

Ingredient Disclosures

There are several ways of evaluating a material’s health that we include with product information. Disclosures are reports by manufacturers about product ingredients, impacts, or other attributes.

Key Disclosures include:
Health Product Declaration (HPD)

A voluntary technical specification for reporting information on product contents and associated health information, intended to be the health-analogue to Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).

Declare Label

Declare is a transparency platform and product database that answers three questions:
  1. Where does a product come from?
  2. What is it made of?
  3. Where does it go at the end of its life?

Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)

A standardized format for communicating the environmental effects associated with a product’s raw materials extraction, energy use, chemical makeup, waste generation, and emissions to air, soil, and water.

Safety Data Sheet (SDS)

A reporting format that provides basic information about a material’s chemical ingredients, the potential safety hazards to installers, and recommended practices for installation.

Linseed Oil Paint

Linseed oil paint offers a healthy, durable alternative to acrylic products. Ottosson’s product is manufactured at their facility in Genarp, Sweden, which was established in the late 1980s. The technique used in making their paints, however, dates back to the 16th century. Cold-pressed raw linseed oil and natural pigments are ground in a triple-cylinder mixer, incorporating the pigments evenly into the linseed oil. The result is a linseed oil paint that creates a breathable, easy to maintain surface that doesn’t peel or bubble up.

*NOTE: Ottosson Linseed Oil Paints contain zinc oxide, a natural fungicide. It adds hardness to the paint finish and is a necessary additive in several North American climates. Zinc requires a warning label due to potential aquatic toxicity under Swedish law. When disposed of responsibly and used as directed, it poses no threat to the health of humans or the environment

Hazard Avoidance and Emissions Criteria:
Products in this collection have been evaluated for the primary hazardous substances often found in interior paints, as outlined by the GreenSeal GS-11 Standard, and according to their respective ingredient disclosures, have indicated that they avoid all hazards.* These products must also meet VOC Content limits, as established by the CARB Architectural Coatings Program, for both their base paints and colorants.

*Certain exceptions are made for titanium dioxide, carbon black, crystalline silica, and PCBTF because of the current lack of feasible alternatives.

Spec Guidance

Look for alternatives to acrylic paints. Mineral-based paints do not off-gas and tend to avoid the hazardous additives described below. Certain mineral-based paints also absorb impurities from the air, actively improving indoor air quality.

Linseed oil paints are another great choice. Follow installation instructions to avoid spontaneous combustion from oily rags etc. drying.

Look for paints that meet the Green Seal-11 (GS-11) standard from 2010 or later. This certification limits the content of VOCs and prohibits other potential hazards such as heavy metals, carcinogens, mutagens, and reproductive toxins.

Prefer paints that meet the strict VOC emission standards of the CDPH Standard Method.

Specify paints with a VOC content of 10g/L or less. Look out for VOCs in colorants.

Avoid paints that contain alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs). APEs, the most common of which being nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) are surfactants commonly added to paints to help the pigments stay evenly spread throughout the paint base. These chemicals break down into harmful endocrine disruptors. They have been banned in the European Union, Denmark, and Japan.

Avoid paints labeled “antimicrobial”. These products often contain harmful biocides, and are not shown to improve population health.

Limit titanium dioxide contents. A whitening aggregate added to many paints, titanium dioxide is a possible endocrine disruptor and carcinogen.
