Speakers: Tom Chung - Leers Weinzapfel Associates, Michelle Roelofs - Arup NY
Moderator: Andy Bernheimer, Parsons School of Design
Timber Today looks at the architectural opportunities and logistics of building with mass timber in a digital age. Guest speakers Tom Chung of Leers Weinzapfel Associates and Michelle Roelofs of Arup, NY approach the subject of mass timber from their respective professions as an architect and an engineer. For Chung, advances in fabrication technology and timber allow for intricate details and complex joints which result in new formal geometries at a mass scale. In Roelofs presentation, she covers the more technical aspects of sustainability, connections, and the approvals process of working with mass timber.
As part of the 2018 Timber in the City, this event continues the conference’s ongoing examination of mass timber as a pathway to a more sustainable built environment. Chung and Roelofs demonstrate the scalability of timber and its ability to reduce the embodied carbon of a building, making the clear case for timber as a viable alternative to traditional steel and concrete structures.
