REPAIR is a means of extending the life of our favorite things. Historically, repair was a necessity when materials and good quality clothing were expensive. Repair can also be a means of artistic expression.
Repair is an actionable alternative to the chronic overconsumption, overproduction, and proliferation of carbon emissions that define our time.
To restart this academic year and welcome students, faculty and staff back to Parsons and The New School, we are coming together (virtually) on Friday September 10th, at 5pm ET to repair, together.
Please join us for a hands-on workshop to explore the ancient art of “Boro”, a Japanese method of repairing textiles by patching and stitching. We’ll cover sewing, patching and theories of repair. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.
You may pick up full “repair kits” the week prior to the workshop at the Donghia healthier Materials Library on the 3rd floor of 25 E 13th street. You can, of course, bring your own materials as well.
The workshop will be led by Catherine Murphy and assisted by Sam Bennett, Senior Researchers at the Lab. They share a passion for sewing, mending and a circular economy.
Please come, meet the HML team, meet one another, learn to mend and start repairing, together.
