Healthy Materials Lab held its #Final7 event Monday evening, highlighting the most healthy and affordable materials used in The Rose housing in Minneapolis, MN. The event, which took place at the Donghia Healthier Materials Library at Parsons School of Design, The New School, in New York City, served also as an opening of the library as a resource for information on health-conscious constructed environments.
“We are working with partners together to try and transform materials for affordable housing,” Healthy Materials Lab Director Alison Mears said while welcoming guests along with Design Director Jonsara Ruth. Nonprofits partnered with the Lab, including MSR Architects, Aeon and Hope Community in Minneapolis generously provided the resources that enabled the completion of the Lab’s first case study and enabled the creation of the Final 7 product categories. Representatives from businesses and manufacturers of healthy materials, as well as students and faculty from Parsons School of Design were in attendance. To showcase the chosen materials,Healthy Materials Lab commissioned installation artist Del Hardin Hoyle to create original sculptures or the event.
“Any material can be fabulous,” said Jonsara Ruth.
Materials featured included Columbia Forest Products “PureBond” plywood, Forbo Flooring Systems Marmoleum, and INTERFACE carpet tile, all of which were used either in units and/or common spaces in The Rose development. See our feature of 5 of the #Final7 materials here. ReWall, a wallboard made of compressed beverage carton scrap, was used to make the #Final7 event wine bar.
